On Wednesday March 30th, the sun was shining down on Clifden pitch. There was a smell of fresh cut grass in the air, blue skies overhead, a cool breeze to remind you it’s still Spring and the sound of children both laughing and chanting surrounding the grounds.

This was the day the 3rd to 6th class students of Scoil Mhuire had been wishing for, it was just perfect! Everything was set up, the students were ready to go and so began the anticipated Spar’s FAI 5-a-side Soccer Tournament. There were 3 groups at the start of the competition with a total of 68 students taking part overall.

The teams were:

Group One
-Church Hill Rovers            -Sky Road United
-Hospital Hill Harriers       -Galway Road Athletic
Group Two
-Market Street                    -Beach Road United
-Bridge Street Athletic      -Dooneen Rovers
Group Three
-Low Road Lads                   -Clifden Glen Ramblers
-Marconi Walk FC              -Spires United

All teams in each group played against one another, and after morning break where plenty of water was consumed and tired legs took a well-deserved rest.

The Quarter Finals saw the following teams gruel out the Spring sunshine and play for a place in the semi-final:

Galway Road Athletics v Market Street

Sky Road United v Beach Road United

Low Road Ramblers v Church Hill Rovers

Clifden Glen Ramblers v Bridge Street Athletic

Galway Road Athletics and Beach Road United were winners of their matches and Church Hill Rovers and Bridge Street Athletic were the winners of their games. All teams headed straight into the semi-final where we were witness to some fantastic football skills, impressive goal scoring and alas some unfortunate misses.

The chants and roars from spectators could be heard all over Clifden town as the teams battled it out for a place in the final.

After much tension in the air, Galway Road Athletic and Church Hill Rovers headed into the final.

With little time to rest, the match for 3rd and 4th place play off saw Beach Road United take on Bridge Street Athletic. All players played fantastic throughout the day but Beach Road United narrowly beat Bridge Street Athletic to the 3rd place spot.

While both teams took the chance to regroup and strategize their next move, there was still the Plate Competition up for grabs.

Spires United, Dooneen Rovers, Marconi Walk FC and Hospital Hill Harriers all had a chance for the title and took to the field, proudly marking one another and giving it their all.

The final here saw Marconi Walk FC take on Dooneen Rovers in a very fast and quick moving game.

Winners of the Plate Competition were: Marconi Walk FC

No sooner had the pitch being cleared of celebratory screams from the Marconi Walk FC players and fans, the final of Spar’s FAI 5-a-side Soccer Tournament was waiting with bated breath to begin. As the ref blew the whistle, the players of both Galway Road Athletics and Church Hill Rovers left nothing behind on the pitch to try and secure victory.

With every goal, the fans cheered and screamed for their favourite players to ‘Push On’ and ‘Keep it Moving’. It was a gripping final but there had to be a winner and in the final moments, Church Hill Rovers claimed success. The team of Filip, Oisin, Kaylum, Jake and Rachel fought off their competition and were crowned the Spar/FAI School Champions to the happy cheers of all spectators and fans.

Well done to all teams involved on the day and to our referees and linesmen Mr McAleer, Mr Lee and Mr O Brien, we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did.

We cannot wait for next years competition.
